News from the Palm Beach zoo

The baby anteater that is 1 month old is not out on exhibit yet, but it expected to be out soon.

The Taper baby is now on display.

I had both my time at the commissary cutting vegetables and fruits, as well as docent training.  This training was about interpretation.  How to talk to your audience in an appropriate and effective way depending on their age and maturity.

It was very interesting, I've had a lot of interpretation training at the zoo, but not illustrated in this manner.  They also did role playing, which is always funny when a grown man plays a small child.

Our trip to Lion Country Safari

Another really fun place is Lion Country Safari.  My cousin Nancy's family came in from NJ so we went there.  It was great fun taking the drive through safari and then they have the amusement park part.  There we fed canaries and giraffes and went to a petting zoo.   We also went on many rides which included boats and a camel ride.  We also played miniture golf.  Its a great day and I would recommend it to anyone.

Playing with dolphns at Miami Seaquarium

Since we have moved to Florida in July, we have done a lot of fun things.  One of the highlights was swmming with the dolphins at the Miami Seaquarium.  They let you feed, pet, kiss and then ride the dolphin around the pool.  I would recommend this for anyone, altthough it is a little pricey, but a once in a lifetime experience.  The Miami Seaquarium also had a lot of other great shows and exhibits, we really had a nice day there.  Then we went out to dinner with my Aunt Ann and Uncle Lou and that was fun too!

Still talking about the Palm Beach Zoo

Answers to last blog questions
Carnivore-meat eater
Herbivore-plant eater
Omnivore-eats both meat and vegetables

Dimophism- means the male and females of the species look different  example a peacock and a peahen, he is brightly covered and has long beautiful tail feathers to impress the ladies.  The peahen has to sit on the nest so can not be so conspicuous.

More pictures from the Palm Beach Zoo  These are from the Wings Over Water Show

Thet even have a bird that can put the shapes in the right hole.

to the Palm Beach Zoo

Since I have last blogged, I have been to the zoo twice, once for Docent training and once for volunteer orientation. At the training we covered taxonomy of animals, which is just the scientific clasification of animals.  You know Kingdom, Phyllum,Class,Order, Family,Genius and Species.  Thank god we did not get heavily into that.  We did go over terminology.
Vertebre- has a spine
Invertebre-does not

Carnivore, Herbivore and Omnivore were discussed, do you know the difference, Answer next blog.

What does dimorphism mean?  Answer next blog.

First Thursday at the Palm Beach Zoo

Well last Thursday, was my first day at the Commissary, it was very grueling, not gross, but just hard work, cutting up all those vegetables.  The next day, my neck and shoulder hurt, I am not used to such manual labor.  Hopefully, I can make it through this Commissary training, it is only every other week, so my shoulder and hand have time to recover.

The frozen Mice did not come out till I was leaving, they were so little and white and actually cute, I have not seen any frozen rats yet, I am sure that will come.

The Thursday night docent training was cancelled last week, but I will be going this week, will keep you posted.

Here is a picture from the Bronx Zoo, next week I will post Palm Beach Zoo pictures.

Starting at the zoo

Thursday's I again will be at the zoo, not at the Bronx Zoo, but now I will reside at the Palm Beach Zoo.  I again will be a docent and am currently in training.  I will also be taking the animal handling course, which requires 3 months in the commissary, making animal food.  I was asked can I handle frozen rats and such, so this should be interesting.

As one of the requirements for the docent course, I had to go see the animal shows at the zoo, they are excellent and my son Steven and his friend agreed.  We got to pet a little alligator, see a two toed sloth and  watch owls and other birds do tricks.

Haven't taken pictures at the Palm Beach Zoo,  so you will have to see more Bronx Zoo pictures, I have 5 years of that to show.
Currenrtly no pictures from the Palm Beach Zoo so here is a male peacock from the Bronx Zoo, they are the only animal allowed to roam freely throughout the zoo.

Male Sea Lion Kiani, at the Bronx Zoo, You can tell the males, they have that bump and their head and are much larger than the females
Flamingos, they have beautiful ones in NY during the summer.
